The countdown has begun! School begins in only weeks, days for some. I know you are crazy busy finding just the right backpacks, shoes, notebooks and folders (with the tabs and pockets that no stores actually seem to carry …. Ugh!!). But every year, I must remind myself of the most important preparation I can make as a parent—covering my children in prayer.
That is why I want to challenge you to join me for the Back-to-School 10-Day Prayer Challenge. Starting August 1, will you commit to spending time each day in specific prayer for your child’s success and protection this fall? I think praying together for our children will be awesome and effective! Prayer is our most powerful spiritual weapon . . . let’s stand together. Here are the daily prayer focuses and some prayers to get you started. I’ll post one each day, starting August 1. Let’s do this!
DAY 1, Prayer for My Child
“The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” (James 5:16)
Thank you for (child’s name). I love this gift from You with my whole heart and ask You to be with my child today and for the entire school year. My child is full of life and love, but is still so vulnerable. It is hard to entrust my child in the hands of others, but I know ultimately my trust is in You. Please walk with him through the halls of school. Give him understanding, focus and clarity in their studies. Open his mind to learning, yet give him strength, courage and discernment to stand firm in his faith. I place my child in Your hands this school year. Amen.
DAY 2, Prayer for Safety
“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” (Psalm 91:11-12)
The world is full of danger. Will You protect my child? According to Scripture, You have commissioned guardian angels to watch over us. I stand on that promise today for my child. Send Your angels to keep my child safe from harm. I pray that You hold my child in Your secure hands today and throughout the school year. Keep my child safe from physical harm. Ward off predators. Protect my child physically, mentally and emotionally. Bring them safely to me at the end of the day. Thank You for loving my child more than I can imagine and for protecting my special student from harm. Amen.
DAY 3, Prayer for Teachers
“The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded than the shouts of a ruler of fools.” (Ecclesiastes 9:17)
Today, I pray for my child’s teacher. I am grateful for someone who has dedicated his or her life to teaching children and I appreciate the sacrifices each teacher makes. I ask You to place a faith-filled believer in my child’s classroom and that You grant him or her wisdom, patience and understanding. Give the teacher a connection with my child. I also pray that my child’s teacher conducts himself or herself with fairness and above reproach. Encourage and strengthen each teacher daily. Thank You. Amen.
DAY 4, Prayer for Administrators and Faculty
“When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.” (Proverbs 29:2)
The decisions made by administrators and support faculty also impact my child. Please give them all wisdom and guidance as they make policies this year. I ask You to fill the schools and district with leaders of faith. Please move in the lives of our state legislators and educators. Will You also touch everyone who comes in contact with my child — office staff, cafeteria workers, librarian, coaches and others? Please guide our school system according to Your will and protect it from any influence against You. I thank You for knowing the big picture. Amen.
DAY 5, Prayer for Education Success
“. . . But skill will bring success” (Ecclesiastes 10:10)
First of all, thank You for this nation where education is a priority. I am grateful for the opportunities my child has to learn that many other children do not. In poverty-stricken regions of the world, families cannot afford to give their children even a basic education. In America, we are all given the gift of education. It is the starting point for success. Today, I ask you to bless my child with a quality education. Place my child in an environment favorable to learning. Give my special student the understanding and abilities to grasp important concepts for their future. Lord, please give my child a lifelong passion and capacity for learning. Thank You. Amen.
DAY 6, Prayer for Health, Strength and Endurance
“Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” (3 John 2)
Thank You for my child’s health. Please watch over my precious one today and throughout the school year. Keep her healthy and strong and give my child the endurance to be successful in academics, extra-curricular activities, sports and more. Give me the wisdom to help keep my child healthy through proper nutrition and plenty of sleep. And no matter how crazy our schedules, remind me to keep her health and spirit as a priority and reduce stress if possible. Show my child and me how to keep things simple and fun! Amen.
DAY 7, Prayer for Attitude
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23)
Please give my child the opportunity to grow in character this school year. I pray that my child will learn the importance of dedication, perseverance, commitment, submission to authority, and compassion when interacting with others. I want to teach my child that everything we do, we do it as unto You! So, schoolwork, activities and more deserve our best effort. Thank You, Lord, for Your guidance. Amen.
DAY 8, Prayer for Friends
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)
I ask You today to place faith-filled friends in my child’s life. Surround my precious one with children who believe in You and who have the same values. Give my child positive influences and help him be that influence and witness to others. Create a lifelong bond with friends who can strengthen and challenge each other to do better and go farther. But no matter who is in my child’s life, show my child how to rely on You most of all. Amen.
DAY 9, Prayer for Me
“Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)
I know that the greatest influence on my child’s life is . . . me. As a parent, I’ve been given a precious responsibility — that of raising Your child. Please give me the courage, the wisdom and the persistence to do it justice. Help me realize that each and every day, young eyes, ears and minds are soaking up my faith, my morality, my values and my work ethic. I am the window through which they will view the world and, most importantly, You. Give me understanding to be sensitive to my child’s needs. And give me the ability to encourage and inspire them to success. Open my eyes and ears to warning signs of danger. Give me boldness when necessary and patience always. I know that You will be beside me every step of the way this semester and beyond. Thank You. Amen.
DAY 10, Prayer for Spiritual Well-Being
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” (Jeremiah 29:11)
Probably the most important prayer I can offer for my child is the prayer for my child’s soul. Lord, I ask You to saturate my child’s life with Your Spirit. Grow and guide my child into a man or woman after Your heart. I know that You have an incredible plan. Please keep my child on Your path this school year. Bring my child closer to You and strengthen my baby’s faith. Continue to reveal Your incredible love to my child. I place my child completely in Your care — spirit, mind and body. Thank You, Lord, for loving my child. Thank You for being with my child every day of this school year. I love You. Amen.
